The recent arrests of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren have ignited a heated political debate between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the INDIA bloc, a coalition comprising Congress, AAP, CPI(M), and others. Top leaders from the INDIA bloc have accused the BJP of manipulating central agencies to target opposition figures ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. They characterized the BJP as a “washing machine” party, alleging that cases against opposition leaders magically disappear if they join the BJP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent interview with Thanthi TV, countered these allegations by emphasizing that central agencies operate independently. He stated, “We don’t direct them (agencies). We neither obstruct nor direct their actions. They work independently, and this is evaluated by the scales of the judiciary.”

PM Modi highlighted the significant workload of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), handling around 7000 cases, with a minimal percentage related to politicians. He contrasted the relatively low money seizures during the previous regime with the substantial amount seized under the current government’s tenure.

Regarding criticisms that enforcement agencies target individuals not aligned with the BJP, PM Modi clarified that the ED follows standard procedures regardless of the ruling party. He noted the misuse of legal mechanisms by the opposition to impede anti-corruption efforts and emphasized the impartiality of the judiciary in evaluating such cases.

The arrests of Kejriwal and Soren have drawn condemnation from various political factions, citing concerns about democratic principles. The ongoing discourse underscores the complexities and controversies surrounding law enforcement actions in the context of political rivalries and electoral dynamics.
